Where to start with 2024?!? It was one of the earliest migrations in a long time. We stayed the course and stuck with our plan. After 20+ years of observation we felt good that we’d have pretty good hunting the rest of the season. That proved pretty true as things started off hot, remained that way, and we had one of the most consistent seasons we could ask for. We were probably within a day or two of some real barn burner days but Mother Nature decided we couldn’t have an entire month worth of “normal migration”. A late March blizzard pushed us back south with the geese and we grinded out the end of our guiding season. We can’t say thank you enough to our hunters that trust us to provide them the experience they have invested in with their hard earned money! Were are so grateful for the landowners that allow us to hunt their land! Thank you to all those that have helped us during off season preparation, hauling trailers, setting or picking up decoys, and all other aspects required to pull things off day after day. A little sneak peak of the start of the Prairie Tornado Outfitters migrator spread for 2024. The front edge of the migration is in central SD. We got the migrator spread deployed yesterday and killing birds out of it already today. It’s gonna be a different year with birds spread out from SD to Texas and Louisiana but we’re excited because we feel that it’s going to provide some good decoying. We may see less birds day to day but feel that a higher percentage each day will be more willing to cooperate.

It has been a wild spring in SD. The weather was up and down with a lot more down than up. Usually we spend a short period in early March in the southern portion of SD and then move north chasing the migration. This year was unique to say the least. The birds couldn’t migrate very far into the state over the last month so we got to live the pit life all season this year and have a lot of success with the adults that wanted to push that snow and ice line. We had great times with hunters that we’ve spent many days afield with in the past as well as introduce some new hunters to the sport of spring snow goose hunting. It’s certainly not over for the spring in SD but as the migration slows down along the Nebraska border, we’ve called it a season for guiding and we now shift to time with family chasing the last few snows hanging around the southern edge of the state, listening for that early morning gobble, or getting in the boat for some spring walleyes. Thank you to everyone that gives us the opportunity to put them in a front row seat to the migration!! Snow goose hunting in the spring can be a real grind, especially when Mother Nature throws everything she can at you and she certainly did this year. I can honestly say that because of the wonderful people we have that come hunting with us at Prairie Tornado Outfitters that it is easy to get up and hunt all day every day. What an awesome weekend!! I was invited to judge at the world championships waterfowl contests in Easton, MD. Had the chance to catch up with some old friends, make some new friends, see some great guys win big contests, and even dust off a call and jump on the world stage. I barely got a chance to practice but it was worth the experience anyway.

Happy Veterans Day to all those that have served our great country! I know I’m getting around to posting this after midnight eastern time but I’ve been a little wrapped up in the honor of judging at the world waterfowl calling contest in Easton, Maryland. The dakota decoys made for a magical morning!! Started off using the jake to creep in on a couple gobblers hung up with some hens and they charged in to find me laying behind the decoy and we double teamed them to fill our gun tags. Then we made a move and set up the double bull with a jake and hen to draw in a lone gobbler for an easy bow kill. That’s only part of the story as 5 gobblers in all were brought into the Dakotas today. What a day of turkey hunting in South Dakota today!!

Dog work is a big part of hunting for me. This old dog has put in a lot of good years and had a pretty fun year this spring. Most days she didn’t show her 12 years of age but several days she was pretty warn out by the end of the day. My youngest son was certainly happy to have her home by the time we wrapped up. 2022 is in the books. We had some ups and downs as spring snow geese and spring weather will do to you but most days I can honestly say we did better than predicted based on the point in the migration and the weather that day. The season started out tough with a short couple days of birds arriving in SD before a blizzard stalled things out. We battled through and shot quite a few birds before most people even realized there were geese in the state to shoot. The days birds were pushing were great. The days that weather stalled them out were tough. The middle of the migration was great this year with lots of big spins. Not all of them finished but many did and there were a lot of great tornadoes this year. We had a lot of great decoying shooting opportunities. The season ended in a similar fashion as it started with weather coming in and slowing things down after a couple weeks of fire. I want to thank all of our hunters that joined us this year. The weather was less than enjoyable most days but we had a lot of troopers that stuck it out and reaped the rewards. A big thank you to those that let us hunt their land. And a huge thank you to my crew that grinds it out day after day. The pit life! We’re chipping away at the oldest of the oldest snows. It’s been a pretty good start in SD considering we only got a couple good migration days and been dealing with some harsh weather since. We’re looking forward to the warm weather in the forecast and getting these birds on the move again. I’m extremely thankful for all those in our military past or present that protect us and give us the freedom to enjoy sunsets like this. As I sit overlooking the Missouri River and eating supper with my family, I’ll never forget where I was on that faithful day 20 years ago when the first plane struck the towers. In this crazy world we are in these days, I hope everyone took some time today to reflect on what happened 20 years ago. This country came together in a time of crisis. I wish the entire country was as united today as it was 20 years ago. My thoughts and prayers go out to this entire country on this day and my heart goes out to all of those that lost family or others close to them in those attacks or the aftermath that followed. We are offering a couple of waterfowl hunts in South Dakota this fall!! Hunting waterfowl as a nonresident in the fall in South Dakota does come with some complications, as nonresidents are required to apply through a lottery system. Nonresident waterfowl applications should be available online June 18 and are due online by 8 am CDT July 14th. We can assist walking you through the application process as it can be a bit confusing. The following dates are currently available for fall 2021 waterfowl hunts in South Dakota: September 25-27 November 12-14 If you’ve never shot ducks on a pothole where they were raised, the opening weekend in September can be a lot of fun. If you’re looking for more migration, then the time frame around Veterans Day is a good push of calendar birds year in and year out. We are running these hunts as one group at a time of 4-6 hunters for a 3 day hunt priced at $1,050 per person. Lodging and food is not provided as we will go where the birds are in the state. Another year of spring snows is in the books. It’s nice to get some sleep again but it’s always sad to see it come to an end. We had the pleasure of spending some time with friends we’ve made from the past and making a lot of new friends that we’ll cherish long into the future. We had a lot of laughs, shared a ton of stories, froze our butts off, sweated our tails off, shot some geese, and shot some holes in the sky. As with all springs, we had some bad days, we had some good days, and we had a few great days. We are truly blessed to live and hunt in a part of the world that has the most amazing landowners that permit us to chase these crazy birds up and down the state. I can’t thank my crew enough. I asked a lot of them and they were there to answer the bell day in and day out. You guys are amazing! To all of you that hunted with us this year, you make it easy for us to grind it out day after day. We are truly blessed with the best hunters an outfitter could ask for. The old girl with her eyes to the sky! The spring migration is in full swing in South Dakota. Birds are scattered from the northern 1/3 of SD all the way to Louisiana and Texas. The lead edge birds have been more workable than many previous years and we’ve had some incredible flocks working down from sky. The next few weeks should get real interesting as more birds find their way north. It’s about time to get this party started!! After a couple of crazy weeks of extreme cold across the entire midwest and heavy snow down south, the weather has turned and snow geese are on the move. Birds in the central flyway are moving a little faster than birds in the mississippi flyway and we are setting up for a stretched out migration. Here in southern SD we have had very little snow all winter and with the last few days in the 50s and 60s the conditions are right for the birds to get here soon. We will likely see the first few flocks arrive in the next few days with larger numbers arriving next week and a continuous flow for the next several weeks. After just a few hunts, I have no problem saying these Boss shells are the real deal!! These 20 gauge 3” 3’s have been incredible whether it’s crushing mallards at 15-40 yards, smoking big honkers at 20-40 yards, or reaching out at 60 yards to tell a snow goose you don’t appreciate that his relatives are jerks most of the time!

Been hearing reports that juvie numbers are good this year and after our first encounter with snows this fall showed I’d say that’s true. Used some snow socks as an attractant for some field feeding ducks and had a few nice bunches of snows work really well. If we aren’t out hunting, we’re preparing for a hunt. Tonight I’m grassing another A-frame style blind. We use prairie cordgrass to grass our blinds. It lasts a long time, provides great cover, and is a native plant across the areas we hunt. We’ve got a couple other blinds that have had cordgrass in them for five years and this will be the first year I’ve added some more grass to them.
